Snowboard Pants

When putting together your snowboard ensemble, snowboard pants are undoubtedly one of the most important pieces of apparel that you will buy. That's because, snowboard pants, more so than any other piece of clothing, affects your comfort level once you get on to the slopes.

Snowboard Pants Insulation Factors

Depending on the area of the country in which you plan to snowboard, insulation may or may not be a huge factor. In general, the pants of an outfit needs less insulation than other pieces of apparel that you might wear such as your jacket, gloves, and hats. Mainly this is because, when you are actively snowboarding, your legs are generating a significant amount of heat on their own. And, this activity keeps them warmer than the rest of the body.

The other reason is that, the leg contains no internal organs that need to be kept warm. So insulation is not as much of a factor. Nevertheless, if you tend to snowboard in frigidly cold temperatures, you will absolutely want to choose snowboard pants that are insulated. If you do buy insulated pants, make sure that the material is "wickable". When moisture is against your skin, it feels colder.

A wickable material allows the moisture from your legs to pass outwardly through the surface of the insulation so that it is not against your skin. And this keeps your warmer. Most of the better quality snowboarding pants with insulation will have this feature. If, however, the areas where you snowboard in are not that cold, you can purchase a snowboard pant model that simply has a single layer shell construction.

Convertible Snowboard Pants

Convertible snowboard pants are the ideal solution for those who snowboard in all sorts of weather. A convertible system is one which has a removable liner - usually with some insulation. When snowboarding in warmer conditions, simply remove the liner and snowboard with just the shell pants. If the weather is colder, put the liner back in. As you might expect, convertible snowboard pants are more expensive, but you can't beat their versatility.

Bib Snowboard Pants

Bib snowboard pants are a one piece style of pants, sort of like overalls. In addition to the leg areas, they also cover the back and chest. For keeping yourself warm and keeping snow away from your body, they are absolutely the best style to wear. Unfortunately, however, they are getting harder to find in stores since many snowboarders don't consider them as stylish as most of the one piece pants. In addition, in warmer weather, they are so efficient in keeping you warm that they can actually cause you to overheat and sweat. But, some bib snowboard pants are designed to allow the upper bib to be zipped off and separated from the lower portion. If you can find these, expect to pay moire.

Snowboard Pants Features To Look For

You will want your pants to have leg vents. When snowboarding, the part of the body that will heat up the most is the upper thighs and crotch. leg vents, usually situated on the inside of the upper leg area, will help to keep that area cool

You want your snowboard pants to have gaiters. Gaiters are that part of snowboard pant hem that seals up against the boot. In doing so, it creates a nice waterproof and snowproof seal around the bottom of your pants leg. In addition, gaiter
slits at the hem of the snowboard pants simply make it easier to lace up your boots. The best pants will also have hooks of some sort that can tie into th boot to prevent the pants from riding up on the leg.

Pockets - you need pockets. The front pockets are usually for warming your hands. Most will have some sort of lining in them for this purpose. Back pockets are optional. If present, they usually come with either velcro fasteners or zippers. Even though velcro is handier, if you want to be certain that the contents of your pockets stay their securely, choose zippers.

Waist bands are a standard feature in most good snowboard pants. They simply allow you to adjust the waist in or out as needed, to give you more comfort.

What Size Snowboard Pants Should You Get?

Although some manufacturers produce snowboard pants in specific sizes, most of them will feature sizes in small, medium, large, and extra large. In general, when choosing your pants, select one that is one size greater than what you would normally wear. The reason for this is than when snowboarding, you need to layer. The extra size allows you the room to wear extra layers of clothing underneath if necessary. The bigger size also allows you better lower body mobility when on the slopes. And, lastly, as you gain weight over the years, you won't have to buy new pants as soon simply because you outgrew your current ones.
