Snow Pants

Snow pants or snowboard pants are designed to keep a person dry, warm and protected from bumps and scratches that they may encounter while snowboarding.

The best pairs of pants follow what's known as the "three layer system" to protect the body from the freezing temperature. The first layer or the base, which is the one closest to your skin, absorbs the moisture from the skin. While the insulation layer or the middle layer gets the heat away from the body and at the same time insulates the body. The last layer is the one that is exposed to the environment.

Typically, the outermost layer is made up of waterproof and windproof materials that block the extreme coldness from the outside environment. But, despite being waterproof and windproof, it can still allow the body to breath. In addition to being weatherproof, snow pants are made up of light materials allowing the snowboarder to move freely and comfortably and at the same time being kept warm and protected.

While it's perfectly feasible to wear ordinary pants made of denim, khaki, or the like - it's not likely to be comfortable. Especially when you've taken a fall or two.

When snow gets into pants made of material that absorbs moisture, it melts and gets wet making the pants heavier. Snow pant, on the other hand, are waterproof and windproof. Since the snow is unable to penetrate the layers, they remain lightweight. Snow pants are also baggier than normal or casual pants which gives you a lot more room to move.

You can find snow pants in a variety of different colors and prints. From solid colors to bright neon, from camouflage to hip prints.

Some of them can be quite expensive. But, if you are willing to do a bit of research you can always find deals. For example, if you have nothing against used or second hand snow pants, you can look at garage sales for pre-owned or second-hand pants. You will also be able to get these at a much reduced price.

Online auctions are another good place to check out. If buying via auction, check the seller feedback ratings and look at the pictures in the listing closely. Make special note of the age of the apparel and the amount of time the item was used, etc.

Lastly, visit snowboard shops once the season is over. This is when you will often find the best deals on new merchandise.
